History

 

Wickham Market was recorded in the Little Domesday Book in 1086 when it was called Wikham. It has been a town of some importance with a town hall in which quarter sessions were held; a weekly market and two fairs were granted by Henry VI in 1440. These lapsed several centuries ago. In the recent past there was an iron and engineering works producing steam engines, water wheels, windmills and machinery especially for corn and flour mills.

For more about the history of the village and its occupants Wickham Market and Area Archive Centre holds a collection of documents, photographs, books, maps, etc fof Wickham Market and district for the study of the locality, buildings, families and their histories.
